PORTABLE, FAST  IMAGING DEVICES GETTING MORE COMMON IN THE E.R.

is an independent journal of the latest medical devices, technologies and discoveries, in many fields, including  Emergency Medicine. It is written, edited and published by a group of MDs and biomed engineers, and maintained in a blog form, so that the latest stories regarding new devices in the field of Emergency Medicine are at the top of the page. Technology in Medicine is improving, and there are device discovers faster than before, because of the improvement of internet tools to disover them.   Click to see the latest news on Emergency room gadgets or devices

    Emergency Ultrasound

Technologies similar to s the VScan and I-Stat will have a place in the future of the Emergency Room.  The VScan, essentially a portable hand-held ultraound deviice, is currently used to diagnose valvular lesions of the heart, as well as diagnosing fetal distress.  Most likely, this technology will improve, so that Emergency Physicians will be able to use an improved Vscan to diagnose, at the bedside, gallstone, kidney stones, and carotid stenosis, as well as DVT of legs.
One such device was unveiled in June 2012, , a new portable compact ultrasound that could be that form of an ultrasound in the ER  in the near-future.

This device has not been approved, as of yet, by the FDA, but will undoubted find a place in most ERs, to rapid dianose all the aforementioned conditions, and both speed up patient flow, and prevent help prevent congestion in the ER.

    Lab Testing in the ER

The i-Stat, a portable lab testing device, currently takes about 10 minutes for lab results as the bedside.  This is about the same amount of time a good Hospital lab will take for a quick H and H.
A future I-Scan will take less time, and will aid in cases of almost spontaneous, instant lab results, as well as instant toxicology reports.  Remember, the days of nanomedicine are coming!

Telemedicine is playing a more active role in some ERs.  In June 2012, the FDA cleared for use an ““, This medical device could find a niche in some ERs, to be able to examine patients in home healthcare, and nursing home settings, that could avoid an unnecessary hospital visit.  Vitals would be taken onsite, and the doctor would be able to evaluate the patient remotely, and order the appropriate treatment, or simply advise that the patient needs to be brought to the ER for further evaluation.

     Portable CT Scan

Also, on the drawing board, and on a track for approval is a .  This would speed up diagnostic capabilities tremendously, as well as being able to more effectively monitor the patient in the ER, rather than a remote CT suite in the radiology section of the hospital.

Most ER doc’s fear it, many have experienced it, but there is nothing as stressful in doing a difficult intubation in a critically ill patient.  This “King” video Laryngoscope is durable, reliable, and relatively inexpensive, so most ERs can afford it.  No longer will the ER doc have to frantically call anesthesia.

showed that, with appropriate mobile technology, EMT were able to initiate treatment of MI patients quicker in the field with thrombolytics.  With wireless technology, complete EKGs were able to be performed, and this study shows great promise for rapid, in the field treatment, due to the ability to transmit more accurate information to the Emergency Room.
